This work depicts Siddhartha Gautama in dhyana, meditative absorption. In the tradition, this is the posture of the awakening itself: he sat beneath the Bodhi tree, vowing not to rise until he had seen through the nature of suffering, and it was out of this stillness that he became “the Buddha” — literally “the awakened one.”
